This is the book that started my love affair with Pat Conroy's writing. I read it when I was young and idealistic. The story is much different from what I remember with one exception. It is still one of my all-time favorite novels. My thanks to Lawyer and all the folks at the On the Southern Literary Trail group for giving me the opportunity to read and discuss this and many other fine books.Theres a lot of rough language and hazing in Pat Conroys (a former Citadel alum ) story about four very different roommates who rely on each other to survive military school during the Vietnam Era. Its a long buildup, but when the cadets discover a secret society going back decades at the school things really heat up and the last 150 pages are unputdownable. Its a tale you wont soon forget. Recommended with above considerations for those who enjoyed PCs more autobiographical The Great Santini.
My favorite read of the year! Pat Conroy wrote beautifully. Ive read a few of his books and have loved them all so far. This one is probably my favorite, or at least a close tie with Beach Music. This is the story of a cadet at the Carolina Military Institute in Charleston during the turbulent 1960s. Its based on Conroys own experiences at The Citadel. Powerful and wonderfully told through the memories of a young man who experienced the hazing culture of a southern military college. Conroy said the school was a composite of several schools, but it strikingly resembles the Citadel in Charleston, SC where the story takes place. Great characters, memorable action, and Charleston is so well described the old city serves as an additional character in the plot. Powerful suspense and a satisfying ending. Conroy was a master.
I should have been a tough audience for this one this time. I read it eight years ago, and I don't typically reread. What's more, I'm even more dismissive of most fiction than I was then. This one was a five-star, jaw-dropping experience then in a way that is not typically repeatable, especially with more jaded places in my heart than I had then.Is the irrepressible exception, the affirmation of life as a man, maybe especially a southern man, with all of its pain in all its beauty. Oh wow, just wow.....I know that I should be the president of the "I love Pat Conroy fan club", but this book was just in a word fantastic. I went through the gauntlet of emotions while reading this story. Mr Conroy remains in my mind the consummate story teller.
