Rendition Toward Books Hersenschimmen

[...] Ze houdt me in de gaten.' Meer nog dan een verhaal over dementie is Hersenschimmen een liefdesgeschiedenis, met een overmijdelijk tragisch einde.

Write-Up Based On Books Hersenschimmen
Terrifyingly good. Unputdownable. The dementia of a man experienced from the inside.A must read.

It's a good thing I read it in Hebrew, because that means I managed it faster. This is not an easy read. It's a good book and an interesting subject, but it weighs you down and it made me feel twice my age when I read it.

This book is a literary masterpiece telling a very sad story about an old man and the changes he suffers because of Alzheimer's. Beautifully written, it is one of those books that strike a chord inside you on multiple levels. I could empathize with both the main character, powerless while losing his memories, and with his wife, powerless while losing the love of her life. The book reminded me somehow of the second half of ''Flowers for Algernon'', by presenting an accelerating race of the self

Reread! This book is BEAUTIFUL. This is one of the few books that left a deep and immense impression on me. Bernlef is a great writer. The way he wrote this book makes you live through the dementia of the main character as if you yourself are going through it. It's beautifully written and extremely sad. If you ever wanted a peek inside a dementia patients head, this is the book for you. This book just gave me all the feels. It just makes you want to help the main character, but there is

I think it's good to read this book, because it's from the perspective of an Alzheimer patient and not someone around it. It's so painful to see how Maarten slowly declines and gets worse, and it's so painful for his wife Vera. I am glad I read this book, it's worth reading and I'd recommend it. 3 stars.

From my blog 3.5 starsThis novel was originally written in Dutch, and I've also read it in that language. As an English translation does exist, I feel justified writing this review in English. It should however be noted that I could not find an English copy (online) below 127 pounds. Out of Mind centres around 71-year-old Maarten who figures out he has been having trouble remembering lately. This story beautifully describes his and his wife's struggle with getting older. As this is quite a short

This book shows the slow deteriation of a man suffering from dementia. The story becomes more fragmented and non-lineair as his condition worsens. Very strongly written and heartbreaking if you've seen loved ones go through this.
