He is amazed to find herself, unknowingly, finds himself thoroughly beguiled by his distand cousins and, most intriguing of all, their strongminded sister Frederica, who seems more concerned with her family's welfare than his own distinguished attentions. And when his younger cousin ends up in a terrible accident, the dutiful Marquis becomes as chivalrous as ever to the those in his charge. And Frederica begins to imagine the Marquis as match... for herself.

Marvelously fun!I hesitate to label this as a romance novel as it's really so much more than that. The book is not just about Frederica, but about her humorous siblings, Alverstoke, Charles and a list of other dear people. So perhaps it is a romance, for you, the reader that is, to fall in love with these warm and realistic characters.And if your family likes reading Gene Stratton-Porter books aloud, you'll enjoy this one too. There's a hot air balloon adventure with the young brother and a dogOne of the better realized Heyers. A mature romance, Frederica follows the trials and tribulations of the slightly older (mid twenties, oh no, over the hill!) long suffering title character as she tries to give her beautiful (and silly, of course) sister a London season and keep the rest of her siblings under control- with the help of her "cousin", the Marquis of Alverstoke. This was just a fun story with Heyer's trademarks shatter throughout. Because it's been awhile since I read Heyer it took me a few chapters to get back into her style of writing. This of course cleared up once I got into the story. Frederica came across as a strong and devoted sister to her young siblings that drag her along with the Marquis of Alverstoke into many scarps that end up funny or a little to close for comfort. Alverstoke is aristocratic bored jaded man, and his change it adorable
Sad to say that I found this rather disappointing and definitely not in my list of favourite Heyers: while I adore the pairing of Frederica herself and Alverstoke, they don't have enough page space or development in their relationship: she just keeps calling him 'abominable' while 'choking' back her chuckles (I was tempted to do a Kindle count of how many times those words were repeated...) until she suddenly realises she's in love with him after all and wham, they're engaged. The Heyer binge continues, but either my stamina is flagging, or this one just wasn't as much to my taste. I was bored by the plot before it had gotten off the ground.
