One of the best and most sensual Arabic books I have ever read. I read it over 9 years ago and is still stuck in my head.loved it. i read both the arabic and english copies. the english copy was good, you can tell it was a translation. you can feel it! the translation killed the beauty of the language which was a main part of the beauty of the novel itself. i absolutely loved the arabic copy. i think i loved the language of the novel more than the novel itself. really enjoyed reading the arabic copy.
The writing is very poetic and the reflections on Algeria and Constantine over a 50 year period is fascinating. His portrait of modern Algeria where daughters are given in arranged marriages to corrupt officials because there is no other choices is particularly sad.
