Narrative To Books

One of the best and most sensual Arabic books I have ever read. I read it over 9 years ago and is still stuck in my head.loved it. i read both the arabic and english copies. the english copy was good, you can tell it was a translation. you can feel it! the translation killed the beauty of the language which was a main part of the beauty of the novel itself. i absolutely loved the arabic copy. i think i loved the language of the novel more than the novel itself. really enjoyed reading the arabic copy.
The writing is very poetic and the reflections on Algeria and Constantine over a 50 year period is fascinating. His portrait of modern Algeria where daughters are given in arranged marriages to corrupt officials because there is no other choices is particularly sad. Also sad is the general disillusionment of Arabs and what has happened after their so-called freedom.Khaled is a former fighter in the Algerian war of liberation. He lives in Paris where he has become a famous painter. He loves his

What a masterpiece of literature!Although i love arabic language and find it unique, i rarely read arabic novels due to bad experience. this book ignited this love again with the author's great use of language better than anything i have ever read of contemporary literature; 400 pages were music to my ears regardless of the plot/ events. If arabic language was a wild horse, Ahlam M is the tamer, if it was a song, she is the um kulthoum.Style:Captivating angry, passionate, disappointed and
There are bridges which we cannot burn down after crossing them, because they stay inside us, like a memory. There are countries which we live and countries which live in us, so says Khaled. The one he lives in is France, against whom he fought in order the break her chains from Algiers, which is the one living in him. His language is French, the manacle he cannot free himself after all those years while Arabic is almost forgotten. Even his mistress is French, but the France gave him everything
mmmm - beautifully written book about hopeless love, the value of being a revolutionary and the dismay when your revolution goes sour and the revolutionaries mostly end up becoming the oppressors .... it was really poetically written, harsh at times and tragic at times. I learnt loads more about the Algerian war, the links with other Arab 'freedom movements' (which presciently anticipated aged the Arab Spring events that swept across the Mediterranean). I had never heard of Constantine, its
