A cross between Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina, with a little Jane Austen thrown in, this book tells the story of a fanciful young Dutch woman, Eline Vere, who desires nothing more than happiness but when she has it in her grasp thinks of nothing but losing it. When she does, her days are filled with increasing misery. Meanwhile, other characters pursue the objects of their affection much more successfully. I was hoping to find in this novel a description of The Hague, where it is set, butMy expectations about this book were that it was going to be very lengthy and a bit boring. As I was reading though, I discovered that the extensiveness was actually an asset for the book. The only thing I didn't like was the main character, she was way too weepy for my taste.

A story of a naive, young girl living in her own fantasy world, I didn't really fell in love with the Eline, I wanted to teach her a lesson. It is quite interesting to see how people interact in that period.

They're just so boring to me and and I can never finish them and I always feel like the characters are SO RIDICULOUS. And just.
