Ilustration As Books The Promise (Belle #2)
London 1914Belle Reilly finally has the life she's dreamed of thanks to a devoted husband in Jimmy and the hat shop she's wanted to own since she was a child. But as the storm clouds of World War One begin to gather, Belle's already turbulent life is to change in ways she never imagined possible.
When Jimmy enlists in the army and leaves for the battlefields of Ypres, her world is shattered and she realises she can no longer stand by and watch, she must volunteer to help the wounded. But her work as a Red Cross ambulance driver in France throws her into the path of Etienne, the enigmatic man who played a significant role in her childhood, and Belle finds herself torn agonisingly between forbidden passion and loyalty to a good man.
But the past returns to haunt her present in other - more unpleasant - ways and Belle's character is put to the test like never before. Can she survive this most brutal of wars with her spirit intact? And will destiny finally lead her to lasting happiness even while war rages all around?

Amazing how a book can be both comforting and exciting. You will fall in love with Belle as I did. My only regret is not reading Belle before I read this, the sequel. The wartime detail is harrowing yet so vivid. Can't wait to read more by this author. The Promise is the authors 20th novel. It is the sequel to Belle. The period is just before and just after the First World War (1914-1918). The action takes place mainly in England, France and later on in New Zealand. The novel is, overall, interesting to read. The gory details of injury, suffering and death during the war are, perhaps, a little over the top. So are the details concerning the victims of the Spanish Flu. At the other end of the scale, the minute details about the women and what
I'm pretty sure that this must be one of the most epic World War 1 romance series ever written. As frustrating as it was that Belle cheated on her husband that one night in France (there's a huge back story to that scene, it wasn't frivolous or gratuitous... but it was cheating, even if they thought that they might never see each other again) I was so engrossed in the story that it would have been completely impossible to stop listening. It's such a truly beautiful, realistic, gripping, tragic

This was the sequel to Belle the story went on much to my delight as I wanted to find out more about what happened to belle, along with this it was very interesting to read more about the war and what went on when Belle decided to join as an ambulance driver, the story had my emotions all over the place , I would defiantly recommend belle then read the promise.
I love any book by Lesley Pearse she just puts everything into her books, and as expected I thoroughly enjoyed this one too!! Highly recommend.
What can I say this is just as good if not better than the first book Belle. The one thing I found that Lesley was incorrect about was on page 442, Lyons Corner Houses were never owned by Lipton, the tea people as she states. They were started, owned and operated by J. Lyon & Co. They featured window displays designed by Kay Lipton (née Man). This may be her confusion. There is just no stopping Lesleys ability to tell great stories. I am now going to get stuck into Survivor. Number 3 and the
